Micromax YU televentures has become quite a renowned name in the Indian market. Ever since last year, it has been releasing a hoard of consumer specific smartphones, such as the Yureka, Yuphoria, Yunique etc. It has been teasing its ‘true flagship’ for quite some time now, and today finally unveiled its answer – YU Yutopia.
Its 2015, and the specifications of a supposedly flagship smartphone have become quite predictable. With potential leaks almost everywhere, smartphone unveilings aren’t mysteries anymore. However, Yutopia played a slightly different game this time.
It has all the expected specifications as such. Staring with the display, it sports a 5.2 inch qHD LCD (565 PPI – 2560 x 1440) panel by Sharp. If we are to get into the details, it has a colour gamut that covers upto 90% of the NTSC colour spectrum with a contrast ratio of 1000:1, for a pleasurable viewing experience. And of course, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 technology, so it can take a few hits here and there.
Keep no doubts with the build quality either. Yutopia, touts a full unibody aluminium chassis keeping up with the trends. It has the antenna bands streamlining the edges and a PureBlack glass covering the display for an immersive viewing experience.
YU has also been kind enough to give Yutopia a full fledged finger print scanner at the back of the phone below the camera module, the best place for it to be. It doubles up its functionality as it can be used to quickly take a selfie, when needed.
Talking about the back, Yutopia houses a 21MP Sony IMX230 shooter at the back (Phase detection AF and optical image stabilisation, woot woot!) and a 8 MP front facing shooter. Thus, as expected picture quality should be pretty decent with that resolution, but real life usage results are yet to be seen. Hopefully, YU will not disappoint us.
Under the hood, Utopia makes no compromises with power. It runs a Snapdragon 810 chip with 4GB DDR4 RAM. The chip may not be the latest in the market as of now, but hey, no overheating issues! It will easily last a day of moderate usage with its 3,000 mAh battery and QuickCharge 2.0. It will be shipped with 32 gigs of internal storage coupled with microSD expansion. Thank you, YU.
If top-notch specs weren’t enough, YU is taking things a step ahead, keeping the Indian consumer bracket in mind. Along with Cyanogen OS 12.1 based on Android 5.1 Lollipop, it will be released publicly with a new service named ‘Around YU’. That integrates various daily life services such as food ordering, shopping, booking cabs, and travel bookings under one roof by collaborating with Tomato, Scandid, Ola, Taxi for Sure, Scandid and so on. Moreover, it will give its users a 6 month subscription to the music streaming service gaana. YU is taking you very seriously.
Yutopia – The verdict
Is YU Yutopia a flagship killer in true senses? Well, yes. It is a complete package that has all the features a user can possibly wish for. However, how well it stands against its potent contenders remains to be seen. Otherwise, YU has done a pretty good job with Yutopia, and hopefully, you will not be disappointed either.
It is currently being priced at Rs. 24,999 (around $375) to compete with likes of One Plus Two And Moto X Pure. It will be available exclusively on Amazon, with pre-bookings starting today. It’ll start shipping on December 26.
